November 4th, 2008, will be remembered in American
and the world history because a Black Man, Barrack Obama, was elected for the
It is a turning point.
It offers hope to all the underprivileged people and communities.
It proves that slaves of one century can become the heads of the states of the
It proves that when people dream, like Martin Luther King Jr dreamt, the dreams
can come true.
It reminded me of the day when Nelson Mandela was released from Robin Island
prison after 1000 days.
It was nostalgic of the day when Desmund Tutu had received Nobel Peace Prize.
When I saw young people, boys and girls, men and women, white and black feeling
awe struck by Obama’s speech, it reminded me of my teenage years when I had
listened to Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto as he spoke for four hours in Bagh-e-Jinnah,
Peshawar, Pakistan. I was thrilled. He promised change. He became a hero and
offered hope to Pakistanis by saying
Islam is our religion
Socialism is our economics
Democracy is our politics.
At that time I was a teenager, an idealist. Later on I saw democracy and
socialism going in the background in Pakistan and Islam coming to the fore
front. And then I felt sad when Bhutto government declared Ahmedis as
non-Muslims and deprived them of human rights. It was all under the pressure of
right wing religious fundamentalists.
I felt really sad when Bhutto was hanged by Zia-ul-Haq.
I just hope that Obama does not succumb under the pressures of right wing
Obama has all the ingredients to become part of 21st century mythology.
Some say he is black, others he is half-white, while others say he has risen
above the race factor.
Some say he is a Muslim, others say he is Christian, while still others believe
he is closet atheist.
Some say he is a capitalist supported by other capitalist groups, while others
believe he is a socialist.
People are projecting their fantasies, their dreams, their ambitions and their
ideals on him, making him the modern Messiah. I just hope they do not crucify
him one day.
I wonder what would he do in the next four or eight years.
Would he end the war in Iraq and send more troops to Pakistan and Afghanistan?
Would the same Muslims who highlight his middle name Hussain burn his posters
and American flags in two years?
Would he change the war economy based on imperialistic and colonial dreams and
fight for a just and peaceful world?
How would Americans react when he would shake hands with Socialist Leaders of
South America or Muslim Leaders of the Middle East?
American psyche needed an enemy after the Second World War, which were
Communists during the cold war and Muslims during the war on terror. If Obama
would make peace with these enemies what would happen to American cowboy psyche?
I hope Obama helps American people, men and women, Republicans and Democrats to
rise above US / THEM mentality and show them that it is not just only about
United States of America it is also about United Stated of the World. We are all
part of the same family, the human family and our enemies are our distant
cousins. I hope Obama helps Americans to grow to the next stage of human
I am curious to see what friends of Obama will do with the followers of Osama.
